Social media

January 15, 2008

Social media – involves people communicating. [Am tempted to add 'with a purpose' but that might exclude Twitter! Need someone to explain to me why Twitter is so 'cool'! I just don't get it : ) Age on display, perhaps! ]

What have I used before?

Blogs – very successfully. Students seem to feel ‘empowered’ when they discover their own voices in this way.

Wikis – not used as much, but beginning to think hard about collaborative potential for students.

Podcasting – this year’s goal. To stop playing round myself and get students on to it.

All of the above I feel positive about, and hope that my students can get as excited as me!

  1. Hello Karen,
After taking a look at your blog I can say that you are an expert blogger. On Week 3 we will deal with Wikis so I hope you can incorporate them in your classes.
I look foward to reading your input on Wikis and Podcasts.
    Warm Regards
    Jennifer

  2. Hi Karen
    Lovely blog you have here!
About twitter: I’m also twittering (illyac). I hesitated to do so for quite a while (for the same reasons as you mention, but some people who I respect and trust have been doing this for a while and see it as a meaningful means of communication. I guess the only way to find out is to try. In any case, it’s rather fun!

  3. Karen, I also have doubts about twitter- I’ve just opened an account for two reasons. One: the SMiELT workshop. Two: as Illya says, if people we respect love it, it’s worth trying. The problem is how much time we spend trying new things. I’m on holidays now, but when I’m working it’s quite difficult.
