This issue of control is an important one. For myself, I haven't found a way to give up total control of what students listen to or read or write. But I try to give them some options. They may have a choice of listening to this or that or the other audio text. And sometimes I let them choose any text on the theme we are working on in class (education right now).

How I handle tasks is to have them write about the text or record a summary or reaction to it. I don't know how it would work for you in your setting, but it works pretty well for me.

I think you are absolutely right that you need to decide how many tool to incorporate into your teaching. There has to be a clear purpose for them, I think. And you don't want to overwhelm your students.

As to VoiceThread, it is open to anyone. They do, however, have another site http://ed.voicethread.com/ that is restricted to K-12. It is supposed to be secure. It is fairly new, I think.

I go to various National Public Radio sites for the RSS channel needed to listen to the individual programs (such as Fresh Air, Driveway Moments, The Splendid Table). Then I download each RSS Channel to get the Podcasts for each program permanently (unless I choose to delete a particular RSS channel) saved to my PSP (PlayStation Portable).

Once the channel is on my PSP, there are two options to listen to a podcast of my favorite show(s):

(1) In a Wi-Fi spot (such as my house, favorite coffee shop or any wireless location in the world)I can listen directly from the internet. Or,
(2) One can take 2-3 minutes to save the desired Podcast to the memory stick on the PSP. This second method means that the podcast is now like a MP3 recording. I can put my earphones on, and listen while walking the track, cleaning the house etc., without needing to be connected to the internet while listening.

NPR.org has a very long list of Podcasts connected to each program. Enjoy.

Love the picture you chose!
It would be interesting to do a study on the effect the 'icon buddy' has on the those who encounter it, and the reasons for a person to chose the 'buddy' the did.
Meandering thoughts :-)
